Echoes from the Drain: Resurrecting the Paisley Abbey Slate
During the archaeological excavations of the drain at Paisley Abbey in the 1990s, an extraordinary piece of Renfrewshire’s cultural heritage was unearthed from the medieval mud: a broken piece of slate, or "sclate" in the Scots dialect, etched with musical notation.

Dating back to the mid-15th century, this humble stone is a rare survivor of the Scottish pre-Reformation era. It offers a tangible, physical link to the music sung by the choristers which filled the Abbey over 500 years ago. It is the oldest surviving archaeologically excavated musical artefact in Scotland. Today, through a combination of historical musicology, modern composition, and artificial intelligence, the Tannahill Arts Festival is proud to bring this lost voice back to life.

Before this music could be reimagined, however, it had to be decoded. In 1996, the late Scottish musicologist Dr Kenneth Elliott, of Glasgow University, meticulously transcribed the slate's ancient markings into modern sheet music. His pioneering transcription unlocked the precise pitches and rhythms of the original fragment, providing the raw material for this modern resurrection.

The Artefact and the Missing Voices
The notes decoded by Dr Elliott reveal a fluid, sweeping melody. Crucially, the physical condition of the artefact tells us exactly what we are looking at: this was the top vocal line of a larger choral work. We know this because the upper edge of the stone is an original, unbroken straight line. If it were a middle or bottom line, the top edge would be fractured, but this smooth border proves no other music existed above it.

However, in 15th-century polyphony  (music woven from several independent vocal lines singing at once), the top line was rarely the main event. The foundational melody, known as the cantus firmus, was typically held by the lower tenor voices, while the upper voices spun elaborate, decorative lines above it. Because the rest of the music is lost to history, the slate provides us with a beautiful but untethered thread. It is a soaring melody whose foundation has long since vanished.
With music from this time, the notation has almost no relation to the modern notation we recognise and play today.

Bridging the Centuries: A Modern Harmonisation
To transform this isolated fragment from a static museum piece into a living heritage object, composer Alan Fleming Baird, an academic at the University of Glasgow and Artistic Director of the Tannahill Arts Festival, built upon Dr Elliott's foundational transcription.

His first step was to explore the fragment's own musical geometry by treating it as a canon. In this early experiment, rendered with emerging AI vocal synthesis into four distinct virtual voices, the original slate melody becomes an elaborate, embellishing line weaving around a simplified, 'undecorated' form of the same tune held in the tenor. It shows how the solitary fragment can be made to interact with itself in a genuinely polyphonic texture.​

While Dr Elliott published his academic transcription of the notes in 1996, this isolated melodic line was never fully realised for public performance. The Tannahill Arts Festival reconstruction marks the first time in over five centuries that the authentic, transcribed melody of the Paisley slate can be heard by the public.​

The sound clip above treats the fragment as a canon, weaving the vocal lines around each other. The next step was to give the music a harmonic framework.

While the canon reveals the fragment's inner geometry, the fuller reconstruction gives it a true harmonic foundation. Because the original 15th-century lower voices are lost, we need to look at what would have been contained in those lines of music, based on the practises and conventions of music at that time. Alan drew on the same cantus firmus principle the artefact itself points to: he placed a simplified form of the slate line in the tenor, the foundational voice a 15th-century composer would have built upon, and let the slate's own melody return above it as the elaboration it was always meant to be. Around this frame, he set the remaining voices using "first species" counterpoint, a rigorous historical method he teaches at the University of Glasgow, in which each added voice moves note-against-note with the line it supports. The result is a four-part texture in which the fragment is no longer an untethered thread, but the ornament crowning a foundation reconstructed beneath it.

While the piano arrangement provides the structural foundation, this 15th-century melody was fundamentally designed to be sung. To fully realise the work, the harmonisation was turned into a composition for an unaccompanied boys' treble choir using the traditional Latin 'Kyrie'. Through specialised AI audio reconstruction, the notation was brought to life, mirroring the pure vocal tone and sweeping acoustics of a traditional cathedral ensemble.

It lets us glimpse something time did not preserve: not just the notes, but the beauty of the object that once carried them.

The next step is to bring this page to true historical life: to engage a local artist to create the manuscript by hand, using the precise notation, techniques, and materials of the fifteenth century, so we can have a living, rigorously accurate artefact, possibly on display in our museum or in one of our heritage spaces.
Where do we go from here?
This initial reconstruction is just a glimpse of what is possible. The late Dr Kenneth Elliott actually transcribed a second musical fragment from the Paisley drain, and both of these pieces demand far deeper scholarly and artistic exploration than a single web page allows. The methodology we have established here, which blends rigorous historical counterpoint with emerging technology, has the potential to resurrect an entire lost chapter of Renfrewshire’s cultural heritage.

To fully realise this vision, the Tannahill Arts Festival is actively seeking support from heritage, research, and local funding partners. With dedicated backing, we can undertake the careful transcription and study these fragments require to reconstruct the music around them in full.

Ultimately, our goal is to bring this music home: to stage a live, public performance of these 15th-century works inside Paisley Abbey, sung by a professional ensemble or local choir. Together, we can return these historically significant voices to the very town and the very building where they were last heard over 500 years ago.
